Fargo Area Schools Get New Shoes From Fargo Marathon Campaign

By Ryan Schuster

The hallways of West Fargo’s South Elementary were quiet on Monday as boxes of new shoes were delivered for the Shoes for Kids campaign. The school and others across the area will soon be bustling as kids return to school for the fall. Some of those returning kids will be welcomed back with a needed boost — a new pair of running shoes.

In North Dakota we are blessed with a strong economy, but there are still kids in the state in need of help. More than one fourth of the kids in the Fargo-Moorhead community are in need of financial assistance. One third of elementary students are not at a healthy weight.

Boxes of shoes are loaded onto a trailer before being delivered to local schools on Monday.

We hope the 1,000 new Nike running shoes that were delivered to elementary schools in Fargo, West Fargo and Moorhead this week will help kids in need live healthier lives and be more active. The Fargo Marathon donated $1 from each registration from the May 18 5K and Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota and the Dakota Medical Foundation provided matching funds to purchase shoes from Nike.

We are proud to take part in the Shoes for Kids program and look forward to continuing the partnership at next year’s Fargo Marathon. This year we had nearly 10,000 participate in the 5K, helping us give away 1,000 shoes. If we have more 5K runners and walkers in 2013, we could give away more shoes and brighten the days of more kids in need in the Fargo-Moorhead community.
