How Shoes for Kids program helped West Fargo child

This week, Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota and Fargo Marathon officials began to distribute 1,000 pairs of new Nike running shoes to Fargo area schoolchildren as part of the Shoes for Kids program. The Fargo Marathon donated $1 from each registration fee from the Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota Friday Night 5K in May. Along with the Dakota Medical Foundation, we matched those funds to help provide shoes to deserving children in the community.

The program helps schools by providing free running shoes to deserving children at area schools, many of whom come from families that can’t afford to provide quality running shoes. Beth Oien, a teacher at West Fargo’s Freedom Elementary School, recalls how the program impacted one of her students last year (see above video).

The second grader came to school wearing boots because he didn’t own any shoes. Oien sent him to see the school’s physical education teachers to pick out a pair of running shoes that were donated to the school from the Shoes for Kids program. After learning the shoes were his to keep, the boy was moved to tears.

We are proud to participate in the Shoes for Kids program and to promote physical fitness and opportunities for recess for children of all ages and economic backgrounds.
