Online insurance marketplaces explained

Starting Oct. 1, 2013, North Dakota’s new Health Insurance Marketplace (also known as the exchange) will allow consumers to shop for and purchase health insurance online. Plans available on the online marketplace will go into effect Jan. 1, 2014.

Online marketplaces are part of the Affordable Care Act (also referred to as “Obamacare”) and are meant to make health insurance more accessible for people who buy their own insurance or are uninsured. If your employer offers you health insurance, you can continue to be covered that way. If you currently buy insurance directly from an insurance company or through an agent, you can still do that, too (although some plans will change in 2014 as a result of Affordable Care Act regulations).

Plans available on the exchange will conform to the guidelines in the health care reform law. Consumers will be able to choose from a variety of plans.

You will be able to purchase health insurance online
on the North Dakota marketplace starting in October 2013.

You may receive federal dollars to help pay for your health insurance. Tax credits are available for people who buy health insurance plans on the marketplace. Eligibility for the federal tax credit depends on your household income, number of dependents and other personal information. Generally, a single person making up to $45,960 or a family of four with a household income of $94,200 will qualify for a tax credit. Use our tax credit calculator to find out if you are eligible.
